TEACHING

Jim May and workshop participants

Jim May will teach a workshop in Sokolow technique and repertory at Peridance, Monday through Friday, 10am-1pm pm, from August 18 through August 22, 2008. Call 212-505-0886 for registration and information.

Teaching is central to the mission of the Sokolow Theatre Dance Ensemble. Artistic director Jim May teaches ongoing classes in classic modern dance at the Peridance Dance Center in New York City, and frequently teaches workshops based in the repertory of Anna Sokolow, in New York City and worldwide.

"The style has breath, movement coordinated and also musicality to it. It just not focuses on technique but on imagination."

"It's amazing how easily true living and feeling make true dances."

Margherita

August 2006, Peridance Center

Repertory:

"Desire" from Rooms (1955)
Male solo from Ballade (1965)
Ride the Culture Loop (1975)

"I could feel other dancers, freedom, and myself"

Seiko Horada

"Interesting to work with such versatile repertory. ...intense, outgoing and passionate."

Eva Hansson

"Most work I have encountered doesn't have the substance and emotional depth that is required by the Sokolow style. I also admire the diversity of Anna's work, how it jumps between so many different spaces."

Leslie Berman

"The major emphasis of Anna Sokolow is theatrical integrity."

Samuel Humphreys

"I felt more dramatic and human being! It's sometimes minimalism, but that's what makes it human!"

Nadine Czyply

August 2005, Peridance Center

Repertory:

Kurt Weill (1988)
Woman's solo from Lyric Suite (1953)

"Outside from Inside. You can see life and painting/sculpting at the same time."

Valentina

"An emphasis on music and dance and their connection. Also a lot of variations in movement vocabulary."

Melanie Crowe

"I truly enjoyed the workshop because I could notice how important the breath is in the dance. I could see how to connect the movement and the feeling...it's hard to explain...you have to feel it!"

Airi Suzuki

"I learned movements, but we move our personal movements. I was very much enjoying moving from the inside. Also I was very much enjoying other people dancing. Everybody has their own ideas and timing."

Fumiko

"How would I describe the Sokolow style? Playing off/with music, sharp, lyrical, rhythmic movement, theatrical, dramatic, honest."

Alan
